Reflect/Refract People’s Choice Award Winner

I exhibited in the Reflect/Refract National JMGA Contemporary Jewellery Award Exhibition, which was part of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial. I was over the moon to be awarded the People’s Choice Award. This was a fantastic achievement and gave me a boost of confidence. The two pieces I created, reference the Stolen Generations (the forced removal of Indigenous Australians from their families) and the path towards Reconciliation.

Wolgol

Wolgol, An Exhibition of Sandalwood and Contemporary Jewellery was my first solo exhibition, held in Gallery 16 at the Edith Cowan University, Mount Lawley Campus. Wolgol is a Noongar word for sandalwood. The exhibition included new works with reference to my PhD research as well as a retrospective – a large culmination of works I have made over the years.

It was an all round sensory experience with diffusers emitting a sandalwood fragrance, sandalwood chips and powder courtesy of The Paperbark Company, sandalwood seeds, wood as well as collections of rings, brooches, pendants, necklaces, sandalwood products, a snapshot of my work station, a large 8 metre long photographic print of sandalwood photos printed on material and a collection of macrame weavings I made, based on the interviews with participants of my research. Historical photos from the State Library of Western Australia and City of Fremantle History Centre were included along with photos taken in the field.

I received some very positive feedback and hope this exhibition will one day travel to reach wider audiences and educate the public on this important tree.

Vision Exhibition

On Thursday 24th September, the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia, Western Australia (JMGA WA) members exhibition “Vision” opened at Gallery Central, North Metropolitan TAFE in Northbridge. The exhibition showcases a variety of contemporary jewellery and objects from local West Australian artisans and is on display until Friday 16th October 2020.

The theme for JMGA’s 40th Anniversary exhibition is “Vision” and as such here is my artist statement:

During the COVID pandemic and being socially distanced at home, 2020 has allowed me to be creative, use my imagination, be inspired and dream. The pieces I have created for “Vision” have focussed on the illusion of being obscured and peeling back the layers. I have taken a sustainable perspective with vision for the future. Two of my pieces use patina to cover sterling silver, with mangart (jam wood) peeking through from behind. The necklace and earrings made of kwondong (quandong) and djook (sandalwood) koondil (seeds) show hidden texture looking within. By giving the pieces Nyoongar names, I am paying respect to the traditional custodians of the land in which I work and live Whadjuk Nyoongar Boodja, Whadjuk Nyoongar Country. This aims to promote a uniting of reconciliation and the hopes of a better future together, danjoo- koorliny, walking together.

Lynn Canyon

I can’t believe this time last year I was in Canada – how time flies! I had the most wonderful time enjoying the spring flowers and even seeing snow for the first time. It was absolutely fascinating!

Friends took me on a visit to Lynn Canyon which is about a 20 minute drive north of Vancouver. Walking along a 50 metre suspension bridge, the view of the waterfall was wonderful and I’m not one to enjoy heights, but it was pretty amazing!

The trees in the park are just like what you see in the movies. Everything was so green! I am inspired by the natural environment to create contemporary jewellery and objects. Here are some photos of the beautiful trees, plants, patterns and textures.

Interstices

I visited the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery several times to view Helen Britton’s exhibition Interstices, which was on display February-April this year. The exhibition showcased works of jewellery and objects from 25 years of her artistic practice, which consumed three areas of the gallery. Helen studied in Perth and now lives and works in Munich, Germany. Her work was amazing to say the least. I have always admired Helen’s works and it was fantastic to see such a large array of pieces in Perth! The exhibition featured jewellery, objects, photos of her working in the studio, visual diaries, videos and large scale drawings. I was very fortunate to meet Helen and have her sign a catalogue.
